#17 of 31 Silence

Chloe sleeps
exhausted
Dreaming her dreams of
running
playing
barking
cuddling

We sit in our chairs
in comfortable silence
snuggled under
favorite blankets
watching mindless TV
chucking together
over
moments with family

The house rests quietly
only the hum of the furnace
and the
    tap
    tap
      tapping
of computer keys

Grandkids
We miss you already
breaks the silence.

  1. The calm after the storm. This is a nice place to be, even with the missing.

  2. A full, busy, active house and then the calm. A weekend full of memories to treasure.

  3. No wonder Chloe is sleeping. I wish my family were closer.

  4. At first I thought this was a poem about good-stuff. I'd love to have a bit of those first few stanzas. And then I got to the end and I felt like my hand was slapped...I'm so lucky for the non-silence...I can feel how much you miss them.

  5. Hmmm, usually there is tension in opposites, but here you seem to have balanced the opposites in a sort of win-win construction. It is a comfortable, contented silence you describe, but it is a welcome, fulfilling noise you miss. Well-crafted!

  6. I agree with Ruth. First I thought this was just a peaceful piece, a poem about contentment, but then it turned out to be kind of sad. I hate the emptiness in the house after my son goes back to college. Don't even want to think about what it will be like when the other one leaves this summer.

  7. You know I know just what you mean, Deb. It is good to be content, but there are other parts of life that are wonderful too, & that is missed. Lovely to portray the opposing feelings in the poem.

  8. I bet Chloe loves to play with the grandkids. And I bet you can't wait to do it again.

  9. Those grandkids wear all of us out. So much fun while they are here and missed so much when they are gone.
