He sat in my room as an 8th grader and announced he wanted to join the Air Force
Actually,
He wanted to go to the Air Force Academy.
In my heart and head, my pacifist voice whispered
"Why would you want to do that?"
In my teacher voice I spoke
"That's a great goal. Do you know what it takes to get into the Air Force Academy?"
He found out.
And everything he did from that point on was dedicated to that dream.
Every class
Every activity
Every choice.
He sat in my room
as a freshman
as a sophomore
as a junior
The dream never changed.
As a senior he asked if would serve as a reference for him as he applied to
colleges with an ROTC program
West Point
The AIR FORCE ACADEMY
Today he told me
He was offered an appointment to the academy.
I'm wiping a few tears as I write this
because sometimes pride leaks out of the corner of your eyes.
Awesome. What a dedicated young man! To know so early is his life what he wants. I can hear how proud you are of him and all that he's accomplished. Congrats to him!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful story. And what a powerful way you found to tell it.

ReplyDeleteAww! I am tearing up too. I love how you lasered in on his focus: "every class, every activity, every choice." What a strong and dedicated young man. Congratulations, teacher (and to him too)!
ReplyDeleteWhat a journey for this young man, appreciation for those who have that dream causes a little eye leakage too.
ReplyDeleteOh my this is a goose bump moment! He is lucky to have a teacher who cares about his plans and dreams, and then helps him to make them come true. You should be proud.
ReplyDeleteBravo! And good luck to this amazing young man.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad he found the inner drive to pursue his dream. So many don't have a dream even, let alone find the wherewithal to follow.
