11/31 8:15 on a School Day

A prompt that I often do with Creative Writing is from a song called "10:15 on a Saturday Night" by The Cure.   I found the original idea on Writing Fix. I decided to take that idea today and see where it lead....

8:15 on a school day
Silent
Peaceful
The only sounds are
the buzz from the classroom
next door and
the tapping of my
computer keys
Restful
Productive

12:15 on a school day
Quiet class
Working hard
or looking like it
Some days
buzzing
Some days chatting
Always polite and
respectful

3:15 on a school day
Buzzing
Loud
Locker doors slamming
friends yelling
Plans being made
Scurrying
Hurrying
Home

4:15 on a school day
Ahhhhhhhhh

  1. I get it Deb. Great that you could find the energy for this Slice. It's appreciated here in Cancun :)

  3. Extra tired in Kentucky this evening, too. My quiet time comes at 2:15, four days a week. The kiddos go to music, art or library.

  4. Perfect - succinct and exact. Thanks, Deb - now go get a glass of wine and rest...

  5. What a great picture of a school day! I wish I could use the words "quietly working" and "always respectful" about my class. We're generally loud and mostly respectful. We have our moments of quiet and disrespect though.

  6. I love the format. I also love that you got that glass of wine. Maybe you should have added, 7:15 another aaaahhh! :)

  7. Oooh, I love this. It's almost 9:15 p.m., which already has me thinking about where I could take this. THANKS for the inspiration, Deb.

Speaking of inspiration... would I be able to use this piece as one the "be inspired" features on my daily calls for slice of life stories this month? If that would be okay with you, then please email me at stacey{at}staceyshubitz{dot}com. Thanks!

  10. It sounds like you don't teach primary grades. My young students rarely gave me a moment during the day to reflect on myself while they worked. Not even at lunch time! But I loved every minute with the kids! Thanks for the idea to write observations at several points throughout the day. I think I'll consider doing it myself!

  11. Deb,
This made me smile. My 12:15 is only quiet because it is lunch. ;o) First graders keep things hopping. What a great idea! I think I'll save this one. I think it would make a great mentor text.
